FASHION WEEK INSPIRED LOOKS

LOOK 1
mode cat eye - backstage Alice + Olivia 2012

what you'll need:
stay all day waterproof liquid eye liner in black

liquid liner and several coats of black mascara always seem to be on trend, the reason is because this look can be flattering on every eye shape. the key element is placement of your product!
bombshells today are pulling off this look fabulously by relying on products like stila's stay all day liquid liner in black and wearing it with sparkle waterproof liquid liner in a bright color such as bora bora a beautiful turquoise.

you have to commit to a feature and maximize it. the cat eye in black will define eyes and look sophisticated. i loved how the sparkle liner looks as an eye shadow, so i painted it on lids with a concealer brush. stila #26 brush is the ideal size for this trick. you can sweep off as much pigment from the sponge soaked liner wand and paint your eyelids. two coats for opaque color like i did backstage at alice & olivia.

tip & trick:
if you are doing your own makeup, a great tip to try when applying liquid liner is to apply your mascara first to determine eye shape. then create the cat eye liner, you will have an easier time creating the “flare” and flip at the end. to recreate the white liner look, stick to a pencil and set it with moonlight, a white metallic shadow. this combo looks like acrylic paint patent shine! apply full strip of lashes and keep rest of your makeup clean and polished.

LOOK 2
mode cat eye - bacstage Alice + Olivia 2012

what you'll need:
custom color blush in coral

there is nothing softer and more romantic than pretty cheeks and doe eyes.  recreate this look with stila's custom color blush  self adjusting coral. if you tend to over do it with bronzer, simply pop a bit of coral blush on top and you will balance it all out and remain gorgeous. this blush takes the effort out of finding the perfect shade because it looks amazing on all skin tones. it has a soft rose gold shimmer built in to add radiance and allow your to blend easily.

bright glossy pink was the showstopper at betsey johnson. if you can't see it from the back row, it's not bright enough! i love mixing lipsticks to create the perfect shade, mix exhilarating and outrageous long wear lip color to create a "neon" lip, then apply loads of sheer gloss in pink on top, silk shimmer gloss in kitten is ideal for adding mega shine to any lip color you chose. try mixing stila long wear liquid lip color in petal and caprice for a new "mod" pink lip! leave lips matte for day and add shine at night for more glamour.

lashes, lashes, and more lashes! if you have ever been backstage with me, you have probably heard me say "more mascara"!!! i use a fan mascara brush to cake on layers of mascara when i need to glam up quickly. stila made a mascara fan brush years ago and i always seem to have it handy backstage. we don't sell the brush but i have a few stashed away for the next sarah's tips & tricks giveaway!
add 2 coats of glamoureyes mascara to your lashes.  coat more in the center to create a doe-eyed look. this formula is glossy and juicy so you can layer as many coats as you desire and never have to worry about cakey and clumpy mascara.

tip & trick:
focus on sculpting and shaping your features by using neutral matte medium tone around the lash line and in crease. softly shape cheekbones with powder bronzer, this will enhance your natural beauty...and will turn on the glam factor.

Sarah’s guide to lining your eyes

Quality: High Performance

using the right product is important. the liquid liner you have should be a quick-dry formula and waterproof, so smudges are less likely, and it should have a thin tip that tapers slightly at the end, similar to a fine point sharpie marker. The color should be rich, inky, and very intense. if the product comes out looking like watercolor, it's time to go makeup shopping!

Maximize your eyes

if your eyes are close together, leave the inner corner bare and brighten lids with a beige shimmer shadow . extend the line at the outer corners and finishing just beyond the edge of the lash line, lift up and angle tip of liquid liner towards the temple. the farther out, the more dramatic the look.
for eyes that are wide-set, the opposite holds true. line the eyes all the way to the inner corner and don't extend the line at the outer corners too far.

Now lets get into the looks!

LOOK 1
Bombshell Bardot Beauty: bold dark liner

what you'll need:
stingray smudge stick, onyx kajal pencil, glamoureyes mascara, dune eyeshadow, topaz kajal pencil

• Apply a neutral matte eyeshadow on your lids to create a clean canvas

• Draw the cat eye. This is the most essential part of Bardot inspired beauty. Apply a thin line of black liquid liner beginning from the inside of your eye all along your upper lash line. Make sure you're closest to the lash line as possible. When you reach the corner of your eye, bring the eyeliner tip upwards as you extend pass the edge of the eye. Be sure to taper the line at the end, thinning the line out as it reaches its end point. you can go over the line a couple times to thicken the line or add a stronger angle.

• Use a pencil to line your lower lids. A pencil is easier to apply when you want to line your lower rims. Draw the liner from the inside to the edge of your lower rims. Kajal Pencil in Onyx is ideal to line inside the waterline and trace the lower lash line. It adds a sultry "worn in" effect to add to your bombshell beauty look. to make eyes appear larger, try lining inside with a flesh tone pencil like Stila Kajal liner in topaz.

• Apply several coats of black mascara. This will help further emphasize your cat eye. Focus layering mascara on the top lash line. if you wear false lashes, apply mascara over your false lashes. i prefer to use Stila Glamoureyes Mascara. It creates the look of false lashes but without the fuss

LOOK 2
Classic Cat Eye

what you'll need:
black smudge pot, major major lash mascara, #20 brush, kitten shadow

• The contrast with dark eyes and feminine clothing  is strong. There was so much variety when it came to makeup at NYC fashion  week. one of my favorite trends was bold, sultry, saturated dark eyes.

• Stila smudge pot is ideal for this look because it is a long wearing  liner and shadow in one. The formula is gel based which means the texture  will glide on effortlessly and allows you to achieve a glamorous, sultry  smudged look.

• All you need is a double sided brush from Stila like #20 to  create this trend look on yourself and your client. For a softer effect  try wearing Bronze smudge pot to add drama to your everyday  beach bronze look.

LOOK 3
On the Edge Cat Eye

what you'll need:
stay all day waterproof liquid liner, forever your curl mascara, stingray smudge stick, prime pot taffy

• when balanced with an otherwise neutral face, black winged liner looks artsy and edgy. create a smooth, opaque base on lids with prime pot

• first use black pencil to draw the winged shape, so you can easily clean up mistakes and make the line look exactly how you want it to

• then trace over the pencil with your stay all day liquid liner to add a patent leather finish as a liner top coat

• layer several coats of black mascara on top and bottom lashes

fall trends!

hey stila fans. here are some of the hottest trends I saw on the runway at the fall 2011 new york city fashion week. enjoy!

trend #1: monochromatic metallic makeup

metallic eye shadows in neutral tones dominated the backstage beauty scene at NYC fashion week. i love the rich texture and shine you get from metallic eye shadows.

the beauty behind this trend is the monochromatic modern touch. it’s about enhancing the eyes with a beautiful rich, velvety, and soft metallic eye shadow. stila’s in the light eye shadow palette is ideal for this beauty trend and comes with a handy lookbook. recreate looks 1 or 3 for the perfect metallic look.

to complete the monochromatic look, use stila's convertible color in peony on BOTH the cheeks and lips.

trend #2: graphic colorful cat eyes

bold liquid liner helps create this 60’s inspired beauty trend. You can’t rely on mascara alone to amp up your eyes, so try using stila’s stay all day waterproof liquid eye liner in moss (dark rich forest green) or alloy (pale matte gray) to create the colorful cat eye look.

for best results, create the wing first and use your bottom lash line as a guide. the wing should appear as though it is extending naturally from the lower lash line. connect the wing when lining the rest of the eye. also, as a good rule of thumb, begin to line upward at the second to the last lash.

liquid eye liner is so hot right now because it makes everyone look like they did their makeup, yet takes less than 60 seconds to do both eyes (once you get the hang of it). try a fun color like green, gray, or navy for fall. and remember when using a fun color for you eye liner, keep the lid neutral.  try stila's prime pot in caramel for the perfect nude base.

complete the look with a nude lip, try stila's long wear lip color in the nude, and a coral cheek using stila's custom color blush in coral.  coral cheeks are another hot trend for fall!

trend #3: red lips

red lips dominated the runway at the fall 2011 fashion week.  for the lela rose runway show, i created a rich deep “vintage merlot” lip for the models using stila’s long wear lip color in daring and mixing a tiny bit of stila's smudge pot in brown to give it a deeper color.

for a more classic red lip, stila’s long wear liquid lip color in fiery is ideal to recreate this beauty trend. it gives you a lip that says “i’m a confident, sophisticated, daring, and strong woman”. i believe every woman needs to own a hot red lipstick that she feels glamorous in.

and remember to pair a bold lip with a neutral eye.  stila's in the light eye shadow palette is a great neutral palette.  try using kitten as a base and bliss in the crease to create the perfect complimenting eye.

for the cheeks, a gorgeous coral goes well with the red and is on trend for fall.  try using stila's custom color blush in coral.

trend #4: bold brows

brows can completely transform your look and enhance your features. i love a strong brow that looks natural. the secret to creating the perfect set of brows is to individually draw on hairs to your brows. you can do this by creating feather like strokes with stila's stay all day waterproof brow color. apply in the direction of your hair growth and you will a difference instantly. it’s a brow stain and a waterproof formula so it lasts all day and won’t smear off in humid weather.

the secret is to use a color that is 2 shades lighter than your natural hair color. this will allow you to add structure and shape naturally.

the hottest product this summer - one step bronze!

editors and stila fans agree, one step bronze is the must-have, multi-use product of the summer!

here are some different ways to wear one step bronze:
  1. wear it in place of foundation and “tint” your complexion for a more natural look
  2. wear it as a primer and apply underneath foundation to create a smooth, glowing base
  3. mix it with your favorite foundation to deepen the pigment and add a sun-kissed glow
  4. apply it on top of foundation with a brush, highlighting areas where the sun naturally hits your face
  5. apply it to your legs, arms and back to give you the sexy smooth airbrushed look seen in magazines

MORE summer beauty trends

“with pops of strong color and a healthy glow, stila’s 2011 summer collection is sure to make you smile”

happiness is the theme for our summer collection; bright bold pops of color have an optimistic feeling and modern way to wear color this season”
- sarah

trend #1: gorgeous glow & healthy sun kissed skin

we all want glamour to look easy and come natural during the summer months. this is a sultry bronze trend that looks glamourous on every skin tone and skin type.

sun kissed glowing skin is most natural in the summer. women are taking such great care of their skin with staying out of the sun and wearing sunscreen daily. one step bronze allows you to “tint” your complexion using a sheer formula that was created for all skin tones and types. i love to see a woman’s natural skintone, freckles, or flushed cheeks peeking through her foundation, it looks youthful and fresh to me. this summer try skipping foundation and use one step bronze for healthy and youthful looking skin.

one step bronze is beautiful on bare skin for an effortless glow apply one step bronze as complexion base, and then apply foundation only where you need it.

use one step bronze on body to create the “glow” and sunkissed smooth airbrushed skin seen on the red carpet.

trend #2: bronze beauty & bold eyes

i love to mix a bright bold waterproof eye liner with a bit of sparkle to the lash line. the hottest summer colors are teal, purple, bronze, and pewter. create a “V” shape to enhance your eyes.  try stila' new waterproof sparkle liquid eye liners.

i love to create a bold line on the top and bottom lashes that extends out and makes eyes stand out. try using a bright bold shade with a bronze cheek and sheer lip. focus the bright shade on one feature and let everything else remain soft and sheer.

spring makeup focused on bright eye shadow, using bright color as liner is an effortless approach to this trend.

trend #3: lush lashes

stila forever your curl mascara creates full, fluttery, curled lashes. i have many clients that use lash enhancing products and they work well, but the lash becomes long and straight. this is the perfect formula for stubborn lashes that don’t hold a curl. i love the look of fullness and a smooth curled lash for every season.

lashes are always on trend and it’s even better when you can skip a step and leave your lash curler behind. i worked backstage at several shows and loved the seventies hippie chic influence across the board, especially with lashes.

trend #4: neon color and pastel glossy lips

colorful lips is a hot summer trend because it is easy to pop on bright pink on lips and cheeks and keep the rest of your makeup bare. neon lip liners make it easy to change your lip color fast without weighing down your makeup bag. try stila long wear lip liner in “obsessed” bright neon pink shade. apply to lips as you would a lipstick.

lip gloss is a makeup bag must have for many women. summer is about pale gloss with a bit more coverage. soft roses, caramel tones, and pale peaches are the hottest shades. You can wear more makeup on your eyes with a soft lip gloss like stila lip glaze in honeysuckle.

summer makeup should be effortless and lightweight like your summer time attitude!

don’t forget to apply sunscreen daily!

summer beauty trends

i love summertime makeup. pops of color, bronzed skin, lighter coverage - what's not to love! here are some of my trend predictions for this summer.

trend #1: healthy sun kissed skin

sun kissed glowing skin is most natural in the summer. one step bronze allows you to “tint” your complexion using a sheer formula that was created for all skin tones and types without being exposed to the sun’s harmful rays. this summer try skipping foundation. one step bronze is beautiful on bare skin and makes it look healthy and youthful. for an effortless glow, apply one step bronze as complexion base and then apply foundation only where you need it. use one step bronze on body to create the “glow” and smooth airbrushed skin seen on the red carpet.

trend #2: bold eyes

summer makeup trends are focused on bright eye shadow. the hottest summer colors are teal, purple, bronze, and pewter. the perfect way to recreate this look, without overpowering your makeup, is to use bright color as a liner. i love to mix a bright bold waterproof eye liner with a bit of sparkle to the lash line. stila’s new sparkle waterproof liquid eye liner combines the best of both worlds in one easy-to-use liner. the perfect way to wear color eye liner is to create a bold line on the top and bottom lashes that extend out, creating a “v” shape. this makes eyes stand out and pop. pair this bright eye with a bronze cheek and sheer lip.

trend #3: pastel glossy lips
use: lip glaze in honeysuckle

lip gloss is a makeup bag must have for every woman. summer is all about pale gloss with a bit more coverage. soft roses, caramel tones, and pale peaches are the hottest shades. you can wear more makeup on your eyes with a soft lip gloss like stila’s lip glaze in honeysuckle. summer makeup should be effortless and lightweight like your summer time attitude!

classic stila products used outside the box!

i like to find new and unexpected ways to use my makeup. makeup is meant to be experimented with! here are some of the tricks i have found over the years.

prime pot waterproof eye shadow primer in caramel
intended use: an eye shadow primer

out of the box uses: use as a "mattifier" to lip color. backstage at jenni kayne spring 2011, i needed a pale lip. i mixed prime pot and camellia convertible color to create the perfect lip. it was flawless and took the shine out instantly.

you can also use prime pot as an under eye concealer.

smudge pot in brown
intended use: a long wearing gel based liner/shadow

out of the box uses: backstage at lela rose fall 2011 runway show, I created the perfect "vintage merlot" lip color by mixing brown smudge pot and daring long wear lip color. the look was classic and sexy.

it can also be used in the eye brows to deepen the shade and enhance the shape of brows. use a thin small brush and gently stroke little hairs in the direction of natural brow growth.

kajal eye liner in topaz
intended use: a fleshtone eye pencil created to line inside the eyes to create "wake up you makeup" effect

out of the box uses: mix topaz with in the nude long wear lip color to create the perfect matte, nude, editorial makeup lip color. I do this often to adjust the color and turn any lip color into a full coverage lip stick. if you have dark circle under your eyes, you can also gently mix in a little topaz into a sheer concealer and let the peach undertone in topaz brighten and lift the darkness away.

perfecting concealer
intended use: an oil-free full coverage concealer

out of the box uses: i went to paris for fashion week and i did not want to lug my heavy kit, so i edited my kit and packed a full range of perfecting concealer and stila’s hydrating primer. i created my own formula of foundation backstage by mixing equal parts of each, which creates a satin and smooth foundation. by adding a bit of stila’s all over shimmer liquid luminizer to my mix, i would create a luminous and glossy foundation. i love this trick and many of my clients love the versatility of perfecting concealer.
